Legislation on the emission of volatile compounds in the European Union is driving the switch from solventborne to waterborne trim paints.  However, the application properties of waterborne trim paints still needs to be improved.  especially, the open time and wet edge time of the applied paint need to be improved in order to obtain the same high level of quality that was possible with conventional solvent-borne trim paints.  New developments on the formulation of a white top coat application on wood are presented.  This elucidated several critical paint components with regards to open time and general properties of the paint.  The model of exctended phase inversion by hybrid resin design is further elaborated and supported by new data.

When Abache Australia was approached by Sebel Hotel in Adelaide to discuss their in-room Personal Care product needs, a dilemma arose.  While Abache products such as shampoo and hand wash had a 28 day biodegradable life, teh small plastic bottles used as carriers of the products had a biodegradable life of 450 years.  Abache estimated that 13 million bottles would be wasted per year across 50 hotels in Australia alone if they were to pursue this opportunity with conventional plastics bottles.  Abache sought a solution to it and approached Fast & Fluid Management Australia.  Fast & Fluid's business is predominantly to supply tinting equipment into the paint industry.  By modifying the existing equipment, they were able to provide a practical and cost effective solution which is to refill re-usable bottles in simple steps to allow maximum efficiency and minimum wastage.  This solution involved hardware modification to enable dispensing into the small bottle opening and introduction of a new software interface to allow simple steps to refill bottles with different residual contents.
